Sid Roth welcomes Mel and Desiree Ayers

SID: Hello SidRoth your investigative reporter here with Mel and DesireeAyers. Desiree is a famous stunt woman in her own right;her dad was the top paid stunt man in Hollywood;doubled for Adam West in Batman,but you were really making a name for yourself.You’re married to this handsome man now -the man of your dreams.How long did it take you to land himfrom the time you met him?

DESIREE: Well it actually took about a year,but from our first date;6 weeks later we were married.

SID: And Mel you got…By the wayyou were doing ok on television.What were some of the shows you didthat we might have heard of?

MEL: I did some episodes of General Hospital,Days of Our Lives, Falcon Crest, Three’sCompany.You know -just daytime, nighttime television.

SID: But how did you take it when you found outthat this brand new bride of yours is bulimic?And what is bulimia?

MEL: I didn’t even know what bulimic was.

SID: Well most people don’t.

MEL: Yeah, when she told me I said what’s that?And she told me about the eatingand I thought you know,God is goodand we’ll just deal with that by faith and the word of Godand everything’s going to be fine.I mean it didn’t throw me or anything.She called me up to tell meshe was crying, she wanted to tell me what was going onand I thought oh my gosh, this must be serious;and when she told me about thatI thought it’s just an eating disorder?We can take care of thatso we prayed and stood on the Word of God.

SID: Wait, it’s not so easy…Desiree,he doesn’t understand.This is not just something you turn the switch off.

DESIREE: Yeah, what was interesting washe said we’ll pray about it;and he’s looking at me like I should pray.And now I’m a Christian, I got saved,I asked Jesus into my heart,but I don’t really know how to pray.I know how to do ohms, I know how to chant.So I looked at him and I just said…

SID: What a mixture!

DESIREE: I said I don’t know how to pray.He said well take my handwe’re going to do a prayer of agreement.He prayed the most beautiful prayer.The next morning I have a desire to go to this churchwhere a girl gets up, shares her testimony;5 feet7 inches, blond, my exact storyand shares how JesusChrist healed herand how JesusChrist is not a respecter of persons.And that’s what I really want to encourage:if you’re out there and you’re battling anorexia or bulimia,Jesus can heal you.He is the healer;he is not a respecter of persons.If he healed one person, he can heal anybody,so you have something to turn to.But it was a 6 month battleand at one point I got really mad at Melbecause he wanted me to go to a support group.In this particular support groupthey talked more ‘the problem’ rather than ‘the solution’and so I slipped back into it;and then he was preaching the gospel about Jesus.How wonderful he isand I looked at him and I said “It doesn’t work!This faith stuff doesn’t work.And he had the Fire of God in his eyes.He looked at me; he went DesireeAyers -I don’t care how many times you slip,how many times you fall,the Word of God says you’re healed and you are healed!And it was like, even though I had a pouty face,something went off on the inside.It was like truth being spoken over meand I knew I was healed.And I continued to read the Word and pray in the Spiritand found out, you know, these are my two keys for victorious living.It’s been 20 years.

SID: Whoa, 20 years!That sounds pretty good.

DESIREE: 20 years with no slip.

SID: Guess what shows she was a stunt woman for? Desiree, tell us.

DESIREE: Well I was a stunt double for Daisy Dukeon Dukes of Hazzard;I also doubled Heather Thomas on Fall Guy.I worked, oh gosh, Knight Rider.I worked on the film Brainstorm with Natalie Wood,but quite a few different shows all the time.

SID: But you had a few close callsand you were almost getting a message from Godto stop being a stunt woman.In fact,Mel did you encourage her to stop?

MEL: Well yes.She just kept telling me you know I don’t feel good about this.I feel like the Holy Spirit’s telling meand I would say well Desiree,if God is telling you to get out, get out.

SID: SoDesiree, why didn’t you get out?

DESIREE: Because of the money.I had a money hook in my jaw.I looked at him and I said what else am I going to do?Am I going to go work in a…I don’t know what else to do.It’s taken me how many years?To where I’m making $25,000 a month now;and its good money and it took me a long time.

SID: Now you were doing an episode for Airwolf?

DESIREE: Yes.

SID: Tell me about that.

DESIREE: Well that was a show I worked on for a weekand again I kept having this tug of war;between going to different meetingswhere NorvilleHayes would be there,but then my beeper would go off.I’d get a call to be on a set and I had a real wrestle,but I felt like God didn’t want me working on the show,but I worked it anyway.And I got a call to go onit and I could just feel all day longthis grieving in my insides.And I was calling people asking them to pray;please pray for my disobedient day here.But anyway,I was working on the show.I was supposed to be riding in a truckand as I’m driving in the vehicleat a certain point,I’m to press a button.The hood of the vehicle is supposed to go up in smokeand I’m to dive out of the car.Well they had a lot of accidents on the show;a lot of mistakes were happening.And when I pressed the button and dove out,I dove into a 14 pound naphthalene bomb -which is one huge, fiery explosion,so it knocked me out.And I had my face, neck and arms burnedin second and third degree burns.

SID: Now for a stunt woman that’s not too good.For any woman that’s not too good!

DESIREE: Well no.No woman wants to lose her facebut for a stunt woman;I’ve done full fire burns with flames 20 feet over my head.But you have on the proper gels;different things that you can put on and you can actuallyput it right on your skin and burn your hand;so you’re usually properly prepared,but this was definitely something that went wrong that day.

SID: And yet had you been obedient to God,this would not have happened.

DESIREE: No it wouldn’t have happened.

SID: But you were disobedient,you find yourself engulfed in flamesand you’re passed out.You wake up -what’s the first thing out of your mouthwhen you realize what’s going on?

DESIREE: Well the first thing I did was cry out to God;and I started to pray in the Holy Ghost and…

SID: In other words that supernatural languagethat God gives you.

DESIREE: Supernatural language, crying out to Godbecause; and what’s amazing about God is his grace is so wonderful;because even when we make mistakes and we completely blow it,we can still turn to himand he can still make a message out of our mess.

SID: Well you know when Desiree woke up in a hospital,she saw her husband thereand wait ‘til you find out the first words out of his mouth.Everyone needs a coach like Mel. We’ll be right back after this.
